Being unemployed is not the end of the world

It is now 2011 and if you are like many people in the United States and many other countries in the world, chances are that you or someone you know has lost a job some time in the last few years. Yes, if you are unemployed it seems that people will look at you differently. And unfortunately, there are some people that for whatever reason do not have sympathy towards those that have lost jobs. There are even some instances of employers stating that they will not hire unemployed people. Being unemployed in this day and age is not considered acceptable by society. I believe that if a person is unemployed, they are looked at and viewed as being less of a person than someone that is employed. I am here to say that I believe that being “unemployed” is not the end of the world. Here are some ways that you can deal with the situation and at the same time not allow others to put you down because you are without a job.

1. It happens to most people at some point in their lives

In this day and age especially in the United States, jobs are no longer secure anymore. When you work for someone else, there is a good chance that you will lose your job at some point in your working career. You have to get used to the fact that things are not as stable and secure as they used to be years ago. Companies are constantly downsizing in an attempt to reduce their operating costs. And millions of jobs have been outsourced to other countries that won’t come back. This is the way that it goes in the business world so you have no choice but to deal with it as hard as it may be to do this. Losing your job really is not the end of the world because the water still flows in the river, the sun still rises and sets and the trees will still lose their leaves. Life still goes on even when we lose our jobs.

2. You are still a person capable of achieving great things

Even though you may have lost your job, you are still capable of achieving great things in your life. You can do anything that you put your mind to. Don’t listen to others that may try to tell you that you can’t do certain things. Constantly visualize and think of yourself as a successful, smart and bright person and you will attract that into your life. They say that a person becomes whatever he thinks about all day long. Try to think of yourself as a success rather than a failure.

3. It is not your fault if you cannot find a job

The current economic situation in many countries is still very bad at this point in time. So if you have sent resumes to companies, contacted your friends, gone to job fairs and done everything that you can to find a job and you still haven’t found one, don’t blame yourself. It is not your fault that you can’t find a job right now. On average, there are 6 applicants for every job opening that is there. With those kinds of odds, no wonder it is tough out there to find work. There are simply less jobs than there used to be five years ago.

4. You have an opportunity to find a better job

At first when you lose your job, it is a tough and stressful thing to go through. That’s true because many of us have been in that situation. But a job loss means that this opens the door for you to get an even better job in the future. Look at a job loss as a positive thing rather than a negative one. Look at this period in your life as a time of personal growth. If you want to do a career change this is the best time to think about doing this.

5. You always have a job even when you are without a job

Most people may not think that you have a job even when you don’t. But you always have a job no matter what. When you were working at a company, your job was to work for that company, be productive and do the best that you could. When you don’t have a job, your job is to find work. However, don’t spend 8 hours a day looking for work as this can get tiring. You still have to eat, shower and do other things too. Also, the other way to look at this is that at all points in your life you always have had a job. When you were in high school your job was to be the best student you could be. When you are an adult trying to work to make a living you have had jobs. You always have a job at all points in your life except at different stages in your life you have had responsibilities that were different. You are not any less of a person because of your employment status. You are still a human being, no matter what others may think of you. You are really never unemployed. That is a label that society puts on people who are without a “job” in the traditional sense.

6. Do not give up no matter what happens

In today’s economic climate it is going to take a lot longer for you to find a job. Do not give up no matter what happens. Try to hang in there and keep looking. Or try to create work for yourself such as starting a blog, web site or investigate into doing freelance writing if you have the talent and ability. Times like these will test how tough you are mentally. You can get through this situation and you will if you don’t give up and keep going. You will land a job eventually. Some employers will still hire older workers who are seeking jobs. Anything is possible especially in America.
